Jan Popluhar, Slovak footballer of 20th century dies
Jan Popluhar (1935-2011), voted Slovak footballer of the twentieth century, died in hospital yesterday aged 75.
Among other things, Popluhar played for Czechoslovakia in the 1962 World Cup final (losing 3-1 to Brazil), and was known for his pure sense of fair-play, proven by his record of never being sent off throughout his long career.
Our condolences to his wife and children, and everyone who knew him. A funeral ceremony will take place on Thursday 10 March in his birthplace of Bernolakovo near Bratislava.
