Up To 8% of Children Aged 5-9 Smoke Daily
An article in yesterday’s daily SME reports the astonishing revelation that up to 8% of school children in the 5-9 age group smoke on a daily basis.
The figure points to a threefold increase since the last survey eight years ago, and the government statistics foresee this number rising even further in future. In the case of secondary schools, the number of underage puffers has peaked already.
Boys in the west of the country account for the most dominant group of child smokers, mostly from larger towns where getting your hands on a pack tends to be easier. The Government Health Strategy that the daily refers to hopes to tackle the problem.
