Almost 700 soldiers have been dispatched to the Upper Nitra region to help deal with the destruction left by the recent floods that hit the towns of Handlova, Prievidza and Novaky and the surrounding villages.
The soldiers have been working in 12-hour shifts, and 123 soldiers came with equipment to clear the mud from the streets and remove the debris from the River Handlovka, among other things.
Spokesman for the Armed Force, Milan Varga, said measures had been put in place that would allow the army to intervene anywhere in Slovakia anytime there is flooding.
