The draft law that aims to amend the present system of parental allowances, which awards either EUR 256 or 164 to parents, by making a single standard allowance of EUR 190 applicable from the beginning of next year, is now being discussed in parliament.
The Ministry of Labour is proposing that later on the maximum allowance be increased to as much as EUR 300 a month, but former labour minister Viera Tomanova says this is just a publicity move.
The revision of parental allowances will let parents receive the allowance to pay for nursery schools or baby-sitters, while they can still undertake gainful activities.
Smer-SD opposition MP, Branislav Ondrus, is claiming that the new system will force parents with small kids back to work.
