Government Gives Green To LGBT Committee

Yesterday the government took the first step towards protecting the rights of the LGBT community in Slovakia by allowing a special committee to be set up for upholding the rights of gays.

Even though Slovakia is one of the last countries in the EU to establish such a committee, Adriana Mesochoritisova from the Right to Choose civil association has referred to the move as a breakthrough in terms of the social acceptance of the LGBT in Slovakia.

The idea has not gone without opposition, however, like that from the Christian democratic KDH party or the Conference of Bishops, which must be shown to be against the committee, at least formally.

The new committee will fall under the human rights agenda with justice minister Tomas Borec expected to be at the helm, with members to be nominated also from NGOs.
