Government To Declare Water a Strategic Asset

The government plans to restrict or halt the export of water, or at least put it under its own jurisdiction, as part of a legislative amendment on the protection of water sources in the country.

The amendment is up for a second reading today and would need also the support of some of the opposition as the government has tied it to a change to the Constitution declaring water a strategic national resource, meaning the government would have control over its export, instead of local government like present.

The legislative changes will also provide protection for the unique nature reserve Zitny Ostrov, which was being threatened by the construction of an oil pipeline to Austria, despite the fact that it is a crucial source of drinking water for West Slovakia.
