Institute for Public Affairs evaluates Slovak democracy

The Institute for Public Affairs (IVO) released its most recent Barometer survey yesterday, 15 July, on the quality of Slovakia’s democracy in key areas of public life.

In the survey the NGO calculated a democracy level of 3.4 for Slovakia, saying it had registered a slight improvement only with regard to independent public-service media, which had won several libel actions in court.

IVO monitored five key areas of public life: the rule of law; the legislature; human rights and minority rights; independent public-service media; and foreign policy in the sense of European and trans-Atlantic integration.

The institute ranks the level of democracy from 1 to 5, with 1 representing an optimum level of democracy based on standards and comparative criteria in the EU and the Council of Europe.
