Nuclear fuel transport deal with Russia and Ukraine

Last week on Thursday in Bratislava, representatives of Russia, Ukraine and Slovakia signed an intergovernmental agreement concerning the transit of nuclear materials through the three countries.

The agreement will lay down the legal framework for the transportation of nuclear fuel to current and future nuclear power plants in Slovakia. The transportation will be carried out by Russian company TVEL.

The agreement means Slovakia should have fluent supplies of nuclear fuel without problems, while taking into account international treaties and guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency and the involved countries.

Slovakia already signed an agreement worth USD 400 million with Russia back in April for the supply of nuclear fuel to units three and four of Mochovce nuclear power plant, which are being constructed at present.
