Chief of police, Jaroslav Spisiak, has taken some credit for the capture of one of the most wanted criminals of the Slovak underworld by Polish police on Wednesday. He said personnel changes after he took up the post played a key part in capturing Karol Mello, who was number one on the Slovak hit list.
Mello has been on the run for four years, and Spisiak referred to him as one of the most wanted and dangerous members of the Slovak mafia. Spisiak admitted that Mello may have eluded capture as he was hiding better before, using various false IDs.
Among other things, Karol Mello is accused of having played a part in a double murder in Most pri Bratislava in 2004.
