Slovak food industry slumped 33.5% last year

The Slovak food industry registered a 33.5% slump in profit over the first nine months of last year compared with the same period of 2009.

The news was announced yesterday at the General Assembly of the food producers’ union Únia potravinárov Slovenska (UPS). All production sectors experienced decline with the exception of feedstuffs and wines.

Last year the foodstuffs industry employed some 30,000 people, which is a 6.6% drop in the year before, with average wages at around EUR 720. Overall Slovakia is 47% self-sufficient in the production of foodstuffs, says head of the State Veterinary and Food Administration, Jozef Bires. Source: SITA
