Transparent party funding? Probably not.

The ruling SaS party wants to shake things up for political parties by making the rules surrounding political party ‘sponsorship’ stricter. Just now the rules let political parties keep the names of their real donors secret, but the SaS party is hoping to push through an amendment to the Act on Financing of Political Parties that would change all of that.

The issue of donations has always been a good ‘pre-election’ weapon in the hands of other parties, and Smer-SD, SDKU-DS and HZDS-LS have all had their fair share of scandals in this regard.

It is surprising that nobody has proposed this before, considering all the talk about transparency, for example. It is pretty questionable, though, whether the proposal will be successful, and you can probably work out why.
