The Ministry of Transport under transport minister Jan Figel is requesting around EUR 2.2 billion in funding from the EU for motorway construction projects.
Leader of opposition party Smer-SD, Robert Fico, is not so confident about the plan, though, claiming that there is no money in the EU for the area of transport. Fico noted that there is just EUR 11 billion earmarked for all strategic framework funding, with a minimum of funds left for the operational programme Transport.
Money was supposed to be relocated from other ministries to the department of transport, but Fico also questions the willingness of other ministries to surrender part of their budget for the good of motorway projects.
