Harabin holds special session on Constitution

Chairman of the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Stefan Harabin, convened a special session of the court’s top officials today, 6 September, to discuss the the latest initiatives that hope to amend the Slovak Constitution and also how the Judicial Council operates.

“A fundamental change to the Constitution of this kind requires in-depth expert discussion,” said Harabin, before referring to the proposals as an attempt to “rid the judiciary of its independence”.

At the session, the officials will also review the part of the government manifesto that deals with the judiciary. Harabin invited also Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska, Prosecutor general Dobroslav Trnka and Ombudsman Pavol Kandrac to the session, together with the heads of regional courts and the Specialised Criminal Court.
