MPs Give Up Symbolic Immunity

Slovak Parliament (c) The Daily.sk

In a unanimous wave of pre-election fever and in the shadow of the Gorilla corruption affair, all 147 MPs in attendance at Friday’s parliamentary session voted in favour of scrapping MP immunity to misdemeanours.

The new legislation will at least deprive politicians and certain other state officials of their immunity in regards of traffic offences, for instance. All parties were trying to claim credit in some way for the law being finally pushed through parliament, with head of SaS party Richard Sulik calling it a historic day in parliament.
