World Cup boosted Slovak economy

Economic daily Hospodarske Noviny claims that the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa has help boost the Slovak economy.

In an article published on Friday 9 July it states that thanks to the World Cup, demand for electronics has grown in Slovakia, which in turn has increased the output of the three biggest manufacturers of TV sets – Sony Slovakia, Samsung and Panasonic by as much as 80 percent year-on-year.

The Slovak Statistical Office noted that industrial production in May was up 31% year-on-year in Slovakia, which is the best result so far this year.

The daily quoted David Derenik from UniCredit Bank, who explained that the growth in industrial output by 3.3 percent month-on-month in May was caused chiefly by increased orders of Slovakia’s two top TV set manufacturers – Sony and Samsung.
