EU Payroll Levies Go Amiss in Slovakia

Slovakia is in trouble with the European Commission again after it was discovered that payroll taxes for EU workers assigned to the country had vanished into thin air instead of being received by the social insurance agency Socialna Poistovna.

The payroll levies covered a period of 4 years from 1999 to 2003, with about EUR 0.5 million being forwarded to an account not held by the insurance agency.

An official investigation is underway in Brussels and in the Anti-Corruption Office in Slovakia. The management at the time are claiming innocence, saying they know nothing about it.
