Questionable requests for EU financing from Volkwagen stopped by Ministry

Slovakia's biggest exporter, Volkswagen SlovenskoThe Ministry of Labour has frozen suspect requests that carmaker Volkswagen made under the former government.

The car plant had submitted two requests totalling EUR 1.6 million as non-returnable financial contributions from the European Social Fund, which were both given the thumbs up by former labour minister Viera Tomanova.

The Ministry thinks that there might be something underhand about the requests and that they have been manipulated, and the police have received a criminal complaint over the issue.

The problem is in the fact that the budgets for the projects were modified several times, but even so, the final amount remained the same. Some entries went up in value while other went down, for example.

Both Tomanova and Volkswagen reject any dirty dealing.
